The Journey from Fear to Healing: Dr. Nelson Bulmash's Remarkable Story

Dr. Nelson Bulmash's journey to becoming a renowned chiropractor began with a shy, fearful child who discovered unexpected strength. As he recounts on the Good Neighbor Podcast, his transformation from a boy "afraid of his own shadow" to a healing professional demonstrates how our early experiences often shape our ultimate purpose.

The turning point came at age twelve when young Nelson discovered his extraordinary physical strength by lifting a 205-pound keg of railroad spikes. This moment of revelation—finding he could accomplish something that seemed impossible—planted the seeds for his future. His natural strength led him to powerlifting, where he eventually became the state champion in Michigan and qualified as the number one lifter in his college weight division nationally. This physical prowess built the confidence that would later support his healing career.

What makes Dr. Bulmash's approach to chiropractic care unique is his understanding that physical adjustment impacts far more than just the musculoskeletal system. "Chiropractic clears the musculoskeletal system, yes, but it also helps you maintain a healthy nervous system," he explains. "And what controls all aspects of the body? The nervous system." This holistic perspective allows him to address issues beyond typical back and neck pain—from depression to learning disabilities like dyslexia, from sleep disorders to digestive problems.

His personal experience with physical limitations gives him unique insight into his patients' struggles. After suffering a severe fall on ice that temporarily paralyzed him, he had to "resurrect" himself through determination and chiropractic care. His own challenges with dyslexia—so severe he once thought himself "retarded" until an IQ test revealed he was actually brilliant—created deep empathy for those struggling with learning and processing difficulties. These experiences shaped his tenacious approach to healing, earning him the nickname "the pit bull" for his refusal to give up on solving health problems.

Perhaps the most powerful aspect of Dr. Bulmash's philosophy is his belief that everyone has a purpose. "We all have a profound purpose," he insists. "It is far more important than one might ever realize." Through his work at Health Matters, he helps patients unlock their potential by addressing the physical issues that may be holding them back. As he puts it, "Part of what chiropractic does is release the magic" in each person.

The transformation from a fearful child to a confident healer wasn't immediate or easy. It required embracing challenges, overcoming seemingly impossible obstacles, and developing the confidence to help others. Dr. Bulmash's story reminds us that our greatest weaknesses can become strengths when we find our purpose. His journey from powerlifter to healer shows that physical and mental wellbeing are deeply interconnected, and addressing one often improves the other.
