E46: What makes Gary Mitchell with Chien Hong School of Kung Fu a good neighbor?

The Good Neighbor Podcast recently featured Gary Mitchell of Chien Hong School of Kung Fu, offering listeners an enlightening glimpse into the world of traditional martial arts and cultural performances. As chief instructor and creative director, Gary brings authentic Taiwanese Kung Fu training to Georgia, alongside spectacular lion dance and dragon dance performances for various events—from Lunar New Year celebrations to weddings, birthdays, and multicultural gatherings.

Gary's journey began like many martial arts enthusiasts—with childhood fascination. But what started as admiration for Kung Fu movies evolved into a profound connection with Chinese culture that eventually led him to Taiwan for authentic training. In 1995, he established Chien Hong School in Georgia, creating a cultural bridge that has now spanned nearly three decades. This August marks the school's 30th anniversary, a testament to Gary's dedication and his mother's unwavering support when others doubted his unconventional path.

One of the most compelling aspects of Gary's approach is his commitment to dispelling misconceptions about martial arts. While popular media often portrays Kung Fu as primarily combat-focused, Gary emphasizes that fighting is merely one component of a much deeper discipline. For children, classes focus on character development, leadership qualities, respect, and humility—values that parents appreciate and that help guide young people toward positive life paths. The physical activity component addresses sedentary lifestyles, offering an engaging way for kids to stay active while learning valuable life skills.

For adults, martial arts training provides an opportunity to rediscover humility and the learning process itself. As Gary insightfully notes, adults often "forget how to learn" because they're accustomed to leading rather than following. The vulnerability of beginning something new can be profoundly enriching, fostering personal growth through the simple admission of not knowing. This perspective transforms martial arts training from mere physical exercise into a journey of self-discovery and character development.

The school offers various programs adapted to different age groups and interests. Traditional Kung Fu classes are available for both children and adults—including 65-year-old students who refuse to limit themselves to gentler practices. For those seeking a more meditative approach, Tai Chi classes focus on breathing, circulation, balance, and centering. Gary beautifully explains that meditation extends far beyond sitting quietly, describing Tai Chi as "taking yoga and moving with it instead of just holding the postures."

Throughout his career, Gary has had remarkable opportunities to share Chinese cultural traditions with notable figures, including former President Jimmy Carter and celebrities like Jane Fonda and Ludacris. One particularly memorable performance for President Carter happened despite Gary's broken arm—he ingeniously held a drumstick inside his cast, demonstrating extraordinary dedication that impressed the former president, who noted it was his first time seeing an American group perform these traditional Chinese arts.

At its core, Chien Hong School embodies Gary's heartfelt belief that "culture is beautiful." The school represents a diverse American community united by appreciation for Chinese traditions. As Gary eloquently states: "Whatever fence you stand on, this country is culture, and if you miss that, you miss everything about who we really are." In today's increasingly divided society, this message of cultural appreciation and respect transcends political boundaries, reminding us of our shared humanity through artistic expression.
